How it works

The walkis the game.

Scottish Insider is built around one rule: you have to be there. No armchair unlocks, no paid shortcuts, no points for scrolling.

01.

Pick a pin within reach.

02.

Walk there and dwell for a moment.

03.

Unlock the story, keep the stamp.

04.

Finish a set, redeem a real perk.

01 · Arrival

Arrive, dwell,
unlock.

A pin unlocks when you are inside its radius, your GPS accuracy is good enough for that pin, and you have stayed put for a short dwell time. Some pins add an on-site code, a QR scan, a time window, or a prior pin that must come first.

The rules are declarative and versioned, stored with the pin. The same rules engine runs in the app and on the server, so they cannot quietly disagree.

02 · Content

What is actually
in a pin.

Four things, every time. Nothing padded out to look busy.

01

The story

A short piece of audio, video or text written for that exact spot. Something worth stopping for, not a plaque copied from Wikipedia.

02

The sources

Every claim has a citation and every image has a licence. If we cannot source it, we do not publish it.

03

What's here now

Opening hours, closures and the honest state of the place. A locked church is not much use on a Tuesday.

04

The safety note

Water, roads, uneven ground, daylight-only. Flagged per pin, visible before you set off.

A weathered stone face carved into rock beside a woodland pathThe detail

The best pins are the things you would walk past. A carved face in the woods, a date stone above a door, the reason a street bends the way it does. We write those up, cite them, and put them exactly where they belong.

03 · Fair play

Cheating is a
design problem.

  • Every reward-bearing event is re-checked on the server, not trusted from the phone.
  • Accuracy limits are set per pin. A vague signal does not unlock a place.
  • Partner perks need a QR scan or a staff-confirmed code, not GPS alone.
  • Redemption codes are single-use and short-lived.
  • Plausibility checks catch impossible speeds, repeated coordinates and bursts of unlocks.
  • Consequences start soft: flag, withhold credit, review. No automatic bans.
04 · Privacy

Location without
the creep.

  • Coordinates are stored only against unlock and visit events.
  • Raw location events have a short retention period; aggregates outlive them.
  • Partners see counts, never who walked in.
  • Account deletion and data export are built in, not bolted on.

The full detail, including your rights, is in the privacy policy.

    First venues on board

Partner venues join, set their perk and their limits, and redemption opens at the till.

  4. 04 · Later

    Native app

Offline trail packs, cached map cells and background-capable audio for full walks without signal.
